College Visits

College visits offer a crucial opportunity for high school students and their parents. They have the incredible opportunity to gain firsthand insights into potential academic homes. As someone who has overseen campus tours and recruitment events in college admissions, I cannot stress enough the importance of experiencing a campus firsthand. College visits come in two formats, either a personalized tour, led by students or admissions staff, or open house events showcasing campus life.

During a college visit, you should immerse yourself in the atmosphere and interact with current students and faculty. If you pay attention to detail, you can gain a deeper understanding of whether the college aligns with your academic goals. When it comes to advertisements, pictures and virtual tours convey so little, it is much more necessary to step onto a campus so that you can observe the atmosphere. Think of it like test driving a car at the dealership, you would want to ensure it feels perfect for you, as you should know if the car is the right fit for you.

College visits often lead to unexpected discoveries, you can stumble upon captivating research projects or engage in enlightening conversations. When you're visiting colleges, keep an open mind and be receptive to the possibilities that arise during your visit. Whether it's attending a captivating lecture or striking up a conversation with a passionate student, these moments in life can greatly influence your decision-making process.

Trust your instincts, if something feels off during your visit, it's essential to explore those feelings further. If you feel a strong sense of connection and excitement during your visit, it may solidify your decision to attend that college. Embrace the chance to explore different campuses, engage with the college community and find the perfect fit for your goals and aspirations. Ultimately, students should feel empowered to make informed decisions about their future academic journey.
