Choosing The Right School For You

Updated: Aug 7, 2023

There are thousands of colleges all across the world, so this brings up the question “how do I know what school is for me?”. Don't worry, although it may seem stressful, there are many ways to narrow down your search.

Go on tours

Going on a college tour is an excellent way to see if a school is right for you. This will give you a feel for if you like a big college town or a small college town. Tour guides also offer a huge amount of information on what each school offers and what a typical day would look like at school. If you feel “at home” at a campus, then the school is definitely right for you.

Think about your major

If you have an idea of what you want to major in, this is a great way to narrow down your search. Colleges provide a list of majors that they offer on their website, so scroll through and see what colleges offer your major/ provide the best resources for your major. If you are undecided, think about choosing a school that offers a wide variety of majors. This way your options are open and you won't have to worry about transferring later on to get your degree.

In-state or out-of-state?

A great way to narrow down your search is deciding how far you are willing to go, as well as how much you are willing to spend. In-state schools offer discounted tuition, so if you are looking to go to a big state school, but don't have as much to spend, in-state might be the right choice for you. Think about how often you may want to come home, and how accessible this would be for you at each school. Would you like the option to drive home, or are you okay with a flight? These are all things to consider when deciding how far you are willing to move away.

Consider the environment

Every college is in a different environment. There are colleges in the mountains, in the city, at the beach, and more. Think about what environment would make you the happiest outside of school. What would you like to do on the weekends? Would you rather go sit at the beach or hike through the mountains? Do you want the option to attend big sporting events, or would you be okay doing without a big sports team?

There is a lot to consider while picking out your school, even aside from the academics. If things don't go as planned getting accepted into schools, don't worry because you will always end up where you need to be, doing what is right for you. There are always options, so do your research, take some time to think, and do whatever makes you happy.
